#PictureHints…Use As A Guideline!

Huge Engagement Ring

With today’s technology and the ease of taking and sending pictures, women can easily drop “hints” to their significant other about what kind of ring they would like to wear.  This is great because it accomplishes two things: it somewhat maintains the surprise of the engagement, and he will be more informed when he goes to actually buy the ring.

But therein lies the rub: some men come in with a picture of a ring and expect to get the exact same ring as is in the picture.

If you type into Google “engagement rings,” you will get approximately 43 million hits, and under the images tab a never ending stream of engagement ring photos.  So in all likelihood the image that you have on your phone is of a ring that we do not have.  Also know that the she is not expecting the exact ring in the picture(s) she sends to you.

Keep an open mind and remember that you are purchasing the ring and have the decision of what to buy her.  Yes you want to get her something that she will like, and the picture(s) she sends you should be used as a guideline, but if you are expecting to see the exact ring in the picture in our showcase (or any jeweller’s showcase) you may be in for a surprise.  A couple points you should remember when shopping for an engagement ring and she has dropped some picture hints on you:

  • Most women are more about the idea of marriage rather than the actual ring itself.  Be creative!  She loves you and the symbol of the ring and chances are whatever ring you buy her she will love.
  • If the ring is branded (Scott Kay, MaeVona, Hearts On Fire, Forevermark, etc.) go to their website and find out where you can buy the brand.  They will often have a dealer locator.
  • If the ring is not branded and you are determined to get the same ring as is in the picture she sent you, the option of having it custom made is always there, but will require time.
  • Give yourself time.  Look at all the options available to you and figure out what YOU want to get your significant other.

Buying an engagement ring is something you do once in your life so have fun! Enjoy the experience, and don’t worry that she may not like the ring – she will like it by the way - she LOVES you!

What is an appraisal and why does it matter?

AppraisalsAppraisals are important documents that describe in great detail a specific item, and usually list the value of the item.  There are different values an appraisal might list, however, these are the most common: Fair Market Value and Retail ValueAppraisers will typically list Retail Value, because the majority of the time an appraisal is used for insurance purposes.  In certain circumstances, the appraisal will list Fair Market Value, which would provide an amount researched from secondary marketplaces.

Appraisals matter because they establish ownership, authenticity, quality, and value.  Many people come into our store having no idea how much their ring/jewellery/watch is worth, and for insurance purposes, this dollar value is important.  If you are insuring an item which gets lost or stolen, you obviously would like to either replace it or get the equivalent value of that item back.  Alternatively, as jewellery gets passed from one generation to the next, appraisals can help in figuring out who will inherit what.

Some jewellery stores (as an example) will advertise rings “appraised at $10,000″ and then sell them for $3,000.  If an item routinely sells for $3,000 but is appraised at $10,000, then the argument would be that the ring is only worth $3,000.  This is not to say you cannot get good deals, but just be aware that if you are insuring this “$10,000″ ring, you will pay higher premiums. Should a day come where you need to replace this ring, the insurance company will replace what you had; if they can find that ring for $3,000, then that is what you will get.

IMG_1256I have also had the question, “this ring in your showcase is $5,000, what are you going to appraise it for?”  The underlying thought or idea here is that it will be appraised higher than it’s retail price (similar to the situation above).  Here at Independent Jewellers, our appraisals reflect the retail value of an item on new purchases; so if you find a ring that retails for $5,000 in our showcase, the appraisal would show its value to be $5,000 (regardless of any discount/sale).  We do not inflate the value of our merchandise.

Lastly, understand that appraisals are not accurate forever.  Think of an appraisal as a snapshot in time, where at the time of appraisal, this is what your item is worth.  Everyone knows (or should know) that the price of gold fluctuates; and most people are aware that the same is true for diamonds and other gemstones.  We understand that you can’t keep bringing in your items every year for an update (although you can if you want), but bringing the item in every 10 years is probably a bad idea.  If you have a diamond ring from 10 years ago and you have it scheduled at $10,000 with your insurance company, but the diamond today is now worth $20,000, the insurance company will base their reimbursement on the $10,000 you had it scheduled for.  Talk to your insurance broker and make sure you are aware of how the insurance process works, and the specifics of your coverage.

Hong Kong 2012

Most people don’t realize how far we travel to find new and exciting product for our store.  Hong Kong is the furthest we go (and I don’t think you can actually go further) and right now my father (Ernie) and brother (Jeremy) are walking through the largest jewellery trade show in the world.  This is the seventh trip my father has made and the second for my brother.

I have not heard much about what they have found and are going to bring back, but what I have heard is that there are going to be some new and interesting pieces this fall at our store.

Personally I have never been to Hong Kong, but from what I hear it is an eye opening experience.  Anything you can imagine in jewellery is there, and the rarest of rare gemstones will likely pass through their halls.  Like this 5.06ct natural fancy intense yellow diamond:

Hong Kong is a massive show, but whatever rare request you may have we can certainly find the item here.
